![]() ![]() The opening chapter was probably my favourite part of the book (uh oh) – full of snide commentary, although I may have read it with rather different filters to the ones Dick wrote it with. The story opens one morning with SFPD bounty hunter Rick Deckard greeting the morning with almost Lego Movie enthusiasm – because that’s the emotion he programmed into his mood alarm. Years later, Earth has been depopulated, humanity fleeing to colonies in space to escape the fall-out and embracing Mercerism, a new religion of empathy driven by suffering and shared awareness, designed to end all wars. After all, if you know how others feel you would never push the button. ![]() World War Terminus unleashed nuclear war on the world. Spot the obvious problem though: I have seen Blade Runner, and it’s really hard to read the book without being influenced by it. Double whammy confession time: I hadn’t previously read Philip K Dick’s classic, and I don’t much like Blade Runner. ![]()

The story revolves around the relationship between the titular character, Owen Meany, and the narrator – who is also Meany’s best friend, John Wheelwright. The reader is always asking questions that are teased out until (at the optimal time) a revelation is made, but by that time one has a new slate of questions – all of which are resolved by book’s end. Irving maintains one’s attention through masterful revelation. Otherwise, if one misses a time transition, one is lost - and then the reading becomes a tedious slog. Stories that jump about in time have to keep the reader in a rapt state of attention and need to be written with multiple cues as to where one is in the timeline. One indication of this is that it is both highly readable and often nonlinear in storytelling. This is an oldie (originally published in 1989,) but I just got to it and must say that it’s one of the most skillfully crafted novels I’ve read in some time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Matthias, Danny’s mentor, was previously fired from the Maldon assignment and banished from the town after falling in love with Maldon's clock spirit.ĭanny is summoned to repair the Colton Clock Tower in Enfield, where he meets clock’s spirit, also named Colton. ![]() Additionally, his father Christopher has been trapped in time since a clock tower broke down in Maldon three years ago.
